overview
what is sortings? we are a wizarding world based community set in modern times in the british town of twickenham on the outskirts of london proper. after the second wizarding war, muggle relations took on a new flavor, with communities of witches, wizards and their muggle partners beginning to sprout up around the world. the ministry of magic relaxed their stringent guidelines of the muggle's knowledge of the wizarding world, and since 1998 wizards and muggles have struck up a codependency.

what kind of characters can be played? characters should be original, within the guidelines of the wizarding world. since sortings is taking place several decades after the books ended, there won't be any canon characters allowed.

does my character have to be from twickenham? no! characters are allowed to be from anywhere in the world, but for the purposes of the community they'll need to live in or around twickenham, or in the nearby city of london.

did my character have to go to hogwarts? no! characters are allowed to have attended any of the canon magical schools: hogwarts in the uk, beauxbatons in france, durmstrang in northern europe, castelbruxo in central brazil, illvermorny in north america, mahoutokoro in japan, uagadou in uganda or koldovstoretz in russia. it is also completely feasible your character could have been homeschooled.

journals, internet and muggle technology though still somewhat foreign, muggle technology has begun to integrate into the wizarding world. denizens of twickenham. characters will communicate through combination of enchanted parchment and journals, owlpost, internet, cell phones, etc. this also allows for muggle-technology based activities, such as beatsense or movie watching.

what can i expect? you can expect a mild sol-style fp with a magical twist. there will be an overarching plot affecting the community, with whispers of dissent from some parts of the wizarding world about the integration with those non-magical. there will be prompts, free for alls, npcs and world building, community wide events for your characters to react to, ideas for narratives, activities and more. please see once you're added for more

can my character be evil? we want to encourage everyone to flex their creative chops however they want to, but do keep in mind after the second wizarding war death eaters were arrested and abolished completely, and the ministry of magic keeps a close eye on dark arts related dealings, though of course some things are starting to slip by. you're more than welcome to make your character 'evil' as long as they are more than just that, and as long as you understand that organically other characters might not want to interact with someone evil.

ic vs ooc don't blur this line. this should be obvious by now, but bears repeating.

extras we will have a first come, first serve claims system for any business owners, along with claims for special abilities, such as animaguses, legilimens, veela, werewolves, vampires and more. we will be eventually capping these special abilities or traits, but haven't decided yet on caps.

joining sortings
journals: journals should be ic, with no extra characters or numbers, and you should have at least one icon of your pb uploaded. we require you to have a screened ooc post & an ic post, backdated.

character bios we don't require you to have a completely finished character bio, but a basic outline of who your character is, where they're from, family members, job, previous school, and magical status should be addressed. we encourage you to flesh out this bio over time and really give your character life!

character bio starter:

rejection: if your application was deleted, it is because we didn't feel you were a good fit for this community. we will contact you if there is something easily fixed, such as being unable to see your examples. we will not respond to pms or comments about why you were rejected.

once you're added
activity requirements: once you are added, you have 72 hours to intro in twickenham. there will be a monthly update requirement you can fill however you'd like, through narrative, photoshop update, interactive post, etc. beyond that we just want people to be active on the friend's page! we also expect you to keep your friends list up-to-date and will remove anyone who hasn't run the friends list button in two weeks.
please drop any activity/updates in the activity tracker in the member area!

activities: we have plans for group threads, events, activities and more, but if you have any ideas, we'd love to hear them so please let us know in the members post once you've been added!

hiatuses & extensions: we understand real life comes first, and will be happy to grant hiatuses if you foresee being unavailable for over 2 weeks. please just be open with us, we're happy to work with you! we're also willing to grant update extensions on a case-by-case basis, but please don't abuse this.
events/plots: events will be posted in the main community periodically by the mod team. these will include town, uk or even world-wide events that will affect everyone and move the main plot along, more focused events that may only affect a handful of characters or prompts will be posted through articles in the prophet. participation in smaller events is not required, but community-wide events cannot be ignored by your characters - though they do not need to be responded to immediately. narratives, threads, and discussion-based updates all count as ways of reaction.

threads/scenes/discussions: though it is not required to scene publicly, we want to facilitate an interactive writing-friendly environment, but you are welcome to rp in the style most comfortable to you. if that’s a discussion prompt that turns into a private scene or open threading on event posts, either is fine. we want to encourage you to post open scenes in Twickenham but it is not required. anything extremely graphic or NSFW must be placed under a cut and tagged with appropriate warnings, and graphic adult scenes should be kept to private entries.

wizarding world
canon: sortings follows the canon history of the harry potter universe so please keep that in mind when making creative choices. sortings takes place after the second wizarding war, death eaters have been abolished and wrong-doing is closely followed by the ministry. liberties are encouraged to be taken with your characters but nothing that would affect the whole of the wizarding world or someone else's character without their consent, directly or indirectly.
